Spacings

To increase tapioca yield, it is recommended to use spacings consistent with the variety selected, and also the appropriate level of soil fertility.  The standard for recommended spacings is 1.0 m x 1.0 m.  However, spacings can be wider or narrower.  If the soil is fertile, the spacings can be 1.0 m x 1.2 m or 1.2m x 1.2 m.  This is to prevent excessive vegetative growth.  On the other hand if the soil is less productive, spacings could be 1.0 m x 0.8 m or 0.8 m x 0.8 m.  This allows the tapioca to grow and cover the ground more quickly, thereby reducing weeding need.  It can be noticed that with narrow spacings, the plants will be taller with many roots of smaller size.  The farmers should try different spacings to determine what is best for their land.

Suitable spacings
at 1.0 m x 1.0 m

Too narrow spacings
can result in smaller roots.
