Use of Improved Tapioca Varieties |
At present, the Thai government has introduced seven improved tapioca varieties to the farmers. They are Rayong 1, Rayong 3, Rayong 5, Rayong 60, Sri Racha 1, Rayong 90, Kasetsart 50. |
These varieties have differing characteristics and the three outstanding ones which have received immense popularity among the farmers are Kasetsart 50, Rayong 90 and Rayong 5. The main factors are the yield and also the starch content. This underlines the importance of varietal improvement in raising tapioca productivity. However, the multiplication of improved varieties is time-consuming, and the stock is limited. Kasetsart 50 can produce up to 60 tons per ha, with 28% starch content, provided that the growers take good care of the crop.

In substituting the traditional varieties with improved varieties, the farmers must make sure that the traditional varieties are discarded altogerther. In cases where the varieties are mixed, the yield will be lower, and it is difficult to differentiate between the traditional and the improved varieties at the end of the season.
